Major Gainers and Losers in Early Trading on October 18; TRV, AXP, LCRX, ALGN, EBAY

Shares of Travelers Companies Inc. (NYSE: TRV), a provider of a range of commercial and personal property and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, Government units, associations and individuals, are up sharply in trading today.

At last check, TRV shares were trading 3.92% higher at $74.18 on volume of 2.10 million. The stock hit a 52-week high of $74.70 in early trading today.

TRV shares are soaring in trading today after the company announced its third-quarter financial results. For the third quarter ended September 30, 2012, TRV reported net income of $864 million, or $2.21 per diluted share, compared to $333 million, or $0.79 per share reported for the same period in the previous year. Operating income for the quarter was $867 million, or $2.22 per share, compared to $332 million, or $0.79 per share reported for the same period in the previous year.

Shares of American Express Company (NYSE: AXP), a global credit card company, are down sharply in trading today. At last check, AXP shares were trading 2.61% lower at $57.82 on volume of 2.31 million. The stock fell to an intra-day low of $57.75 in early trading today.

AXP shares are falling after the company reported its third-quarter financial results. For the third quarter of 2012, AXP reported net income of $1.3 billion, representing an increase of 1% over the same period in the previous year. The company’s diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $1.09, representing an increase of 6% over the same period in the previous year.

Kenneth I. Chenault, Chairman and CEO of American Express, said that AXP generated solid results this quarter against the backdrop of a very uneven global economy.

Shares of Lam Research Corporation (NASDAQ: LCRX), a supplier of water fabrication equipment and services to the global semiconductor industry, are soaring in trading today. At last check, LCRX shares were trading 6.43% higher at $35.74 on volume of 3.13 million. The stock hit an intra-day high of $35.78 in trading today.

LCRX shares are rallying after the company reported its first-quarter financial results. For the first quarter ended September 23, 2012, LCRX reported revenue of $906.9 million, compared to $741.8 million reported in the previous quarter. The company’s gross margin for the quarter was 36.9%, compared to 40.2% reported in the previous quarter. Net income for the quarter was $2.8 million, or $0.02 per share, compared to $18.1 million, or $0.13 per share reported for the previous quarter.

Shares of Align Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: ALGN), a designer, manufacturer and marketer of a system of clear aligner therapy, intra-oral scanners and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing digital services used in dentistry, orthodontics, and dental records storage, are sinking in trading today.

At last check, ALGN shares were trading 25.87% lower at $26.25 on above average volume of 9.52 million. The stock hit an intra-day low of $25.33 in early trading today.

ALGN shares are sinking after the company reported its preliminary third-quarter financial results. For the quarter ended September 30, 2012, ALGN reported net revenue of $136.5 million, representing an increase of 8.4% over the same period in the previous year.

Shares of eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY), a global commerce platform, are up sharply in trading today. At last check, EBAY shares were trading 3.71% higher at $49.99 on above average volume of 16.08 million. The stock hit an intra-day high of $50.42 in early trading today.

EBAY shares are gaining after the company reported its third-quarter financial results. For the quarter ended September 30, 2012, EBAY reported revenue of $3.4 billion, representing an increase of 15% over the same period in the previous year. GAAP net income for the third quarter was $597 million, or $0.45 per share, representing an increase of 22% over the same period in the previous year.
