Major Gainers and Losers on October 9; SPB, SWK, EW, QCOR, OC, AA, NFLX

Shares of Spectrum Brands Holdings Inc. (NYSE: SPB), a consumer products company engaged in the manufacturing and marketing of alkaline, zinc carbon and hearing aid batteries, herbicides, insecticides and repellants and specialty pet supplies, are soaring in trading today.

At last check, SPB shares were trading 10.69% higher at $45.56 on above average volume of 1.26 million. The stock hit a 52-week high of $47.59 in trading today.

SPB shares are rallying after the company today announced that it will acquire Stanley Black & Decker’s (NYSE: SWK) Hardware & Home Improvement Group for $1.4 billion in cash.

SWK shares, meanwhile, have slipped in trading today. At last check, the stock was trading 1.55% lower at $73.08 on volume of 858,571. The stock hit an intra-day low of $72.75 in trading today.

Shares of Edwards Lifesciences Corp. (NYSE: EW), an Irvine, California-based company engaged in the science of heart valves and hemodynamic monitoring, are sinking in trading today. At last check, EW shares were trading 19.46% lower at $86.51 on above average volume of 6.59 million. The stock hit an intra-day low of $85.81 in trading today.

EW shares are sinking in trading today after the company announced its preliminary third-quarter sales. The company estimates sales for the third quarter ended September 30, 2012 to come in at $448 million, which represents a growth of nearly 9%. The estimated sales for the third quarter are significantly below EW’s guidance of $465 million to $485 million.

Shares of Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOR), a biopharmaceutical company, are soaring in trading today. At last check, QCOR shares were trading 5.82% higher at $21.47 on volume of 6.30 million. The stock hit an intra-day high of $22.48 in trading today.

Shares of Owens Corning (NYSE: OC), a Toledo, Ohio-based company engaged in composite and building materials systems, delivering a range of products and services, are down sharply in trading today. At last check, OC shares were trading 7.69% lower at $31.34 on above average volume of 7.47 million. The stock hit an intra-day low of $29.85 in trading today.

OC shares are sinking in trading today after the company lowered its 2012 earnings outlook, citing a weaker environment for its Roofing and Composites businesses. The company now expects full year earnings before interest and taxes to be between $280 million and $310 million.

Shares of Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA), a New York City-based company engaged in the production and management of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum, and alumina combined, are marginally higher in trading today.

At last check, AA shares were trading 0.77% higher at $9.19 on volume of 16.42 million. The stock hit an intra-day high of $9.25.

AA shares are gaining ahead of the release of company’s third-quarter financial results later today. AA is expected to report a break-even quarter.

Shares of Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), an Internet subscription service streaming television shows and movies, are sinking in trading today. At last check, NFLX shares were trading 9.36% lower at $66.64 on above average volume of 8.10 million. The stock hit an intra-day low of $66.10 in trading today.
