Major Gainers and Losers on October 5; GRPN, ZNGA, AVP, FSLR, PAY, GMCR

Shares of Groupon Inc. (NASDAQ: GRPN), a local e-commerce marketplace that connects merchants to consumers by offering goods and services at a discount, are soaring in trading today. At last check, GRPN shares were trading 9.17% higher at $5.24 on above average volume of 12.72 million. The stock hit an intra-day high of $5.37 in trading today. It has now gained more than 12% in the last three trading sessions.

Shares of Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA), a provider of social games services, are sinking in trading today. At last check, ZNGA shares were trading 16.87% lower at $2.34 on above average volume of 99.77 million. The stock fell to an all-time low of $2.21 in trading today.

ZNGA shares are sinking in trading today after the company lowered its outlook for 2012. The company now expects 2012 bookings to be between $1.09 billion and $1.1 billion, down from previous forecast of $1.15 billion to $1.23 billion. The company also said that it expects to a post a loss for the third quarter.

Shares of Avon Products Inc. (NYSE: AVP), a manufacturer and marketer of beauty and related products, are up sharply in trading today. At last check, AVP shares were trading 6.47% higher at $17.27 on above average volume of 8.55 million. The stock hit an intra-day high of $17.36.

AVP today announced that Andrea Jung informed the Board of Directors that she will step down as Executive Chairman and Board member, effective December, 2012, following a successful transition to a new leadership under CEO Sheri McCoy.

Jung said that her decision reflects the successful transition to new leadership. She believes the end of the year is the appropriate time for shifting her role from Executive Chairman to senior advisor.

Shares of First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), a manufacturer and seller of solar modules with an advanced thin-film semiconductor technology, are down sharply in trading today. At last check, FSLR shares were trading 11.09% lower at $20.05 on above average volume of 11.70 million. The stock hit an intra-day low of $19.68 in trading today.

Shares of VeriFone Systems Inc. (NYSE: PAY), a provider of secure electronic payment solutions, are soaring in trading today. At last check, PAY shares were trading 5.37% higher at $31.18 on above average volume of 6.97 million. The stock hit an intra-day high of $32.07 in trading today. PAY shares have gained nearly 12% in the last three trading sessions.

PAY shares are soaring in trading today after Citi Investment Research analyst Philip Stiller said that he met with the company’s CEO this week and was encouraged by the discussion and the company’s plans for getting the stock price up.

Shares of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR), a company engaged in the specialty coffee and coffee maker businesses, are down sharply in trading today. At last check, GMCR shares were trading 5.81% lower at $22.26 on volume of 6.56 million. The stock hit an intra-day low of $21.91 in trading today.
