Major Gainers and Losers on September 10; GERN, AIG, GMCR, SWHC, BAH, PXP, S

Shares of Geron Corporation (NASDAQ: GERN), a biotechnology company focused on developing therapies for cancer, are sinking in today’s trading after the company said that it is ending its imetelstat breast cancer study.

GERN shares fell to a 52-week low of $1.23 in trading today. At last check, the stock was trading 56.38% lower at $1.26 on above average volume of 16.76 million. Year-to-date, the stock has fallen more than 14%, underperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of American International Group Inc. (NYSE: AIG), an international insurance company serving commercial, institutional and individual customers, are down sharply in trading today after the Treasury Department said that it will offload most of its stake in the company.

AIG shares fell to an intra-day low of $32.90 in trading today. At last check, the stock was trading 1.41% lower at $33.51 on above average volume of 30.84 million. Year-to-date, AIG shares have gained more than 44%, outperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ: GMCR), a company engaged in the specialty coffee and coffee maker businesses, are continuing to rally in trading today after the company last week announced that it is entering the wellness sector with new health drinks.

GMCR shares rose to an intra-day high of $31.56 in trading today. At last check, the stock was trading 8.44% higher at $30.18 on above average volume of 17.92 million. GMCR shares have gained more than 25% in the last three trading sessions. Year-to-date, GMCR shares have fallen more than 33%, underperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (NASDAQ: SWHC), a provider of products and services for safety, security, protection and sport, are extending their gains from last week.

SWHC shares rose to an intra-day high of $10.51 in trading today. At last check, the stock was trading 2.57% higher at $10.33 on above average volume of 3.91 million. SWHC shares have gained more than 18% in the last three trading sessions.

SWHC shares have been gaining after the company last week reported its quarterly results. Year-to-date, SWHC shares gained more than 137%, outperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corporation (NYSE: BAH), a provider of management and technology consulting services, are soaring in trading today.

BAH shares rose to an intra-day high of $13.46 in trading today. At last check, the stock was trading 6.24% higher at $13.29 on above average volume of 850,776. Year-to-date, BAH shares have fallen more than 10%, underperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of Plains Exploration & Production Company (NYSE: PXP), an independent energy company engaged in the upstream oil and gas business, are down sharply in trading today even as the company announced the acquisition of certain assets of BP in the Gulf of Mexico for $5.55 billion.

PXP shares fell to an intra-day low of $36.25 in trading today. At last check, the stock was trading 9.50% lower at $36.50 on above average volume of 14.59 million. Year-to-date, PXP shares have been flat, underperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S), a communications company offering a range of wireless and wireline communications products and services that are designed to meet the needs of individual consumers, businesses, government subscribers and resellers, are climbing in trading today.

At last check, Sprint shares were trading 2.09% higher at $5.14 on volume of 63.25 million. Year-to-date, the stock has gained more than 120%, outperforming the S&P 500.
