Major Gainers and Losers on August 29; YELP, ZNGA, JOSB, TFM, FB, JOY, HNZ

Shares of Yelp Inc. (NYSE: YELP), a San Francisco, California-based company connecting people with local businesses, surged in trading today.

YELP shares surged in trading today even as the lockup period following the company’s IPO expired. The surge suggests that investors are confident about YELP’s growth potential.

YELP shares rose to an intra-day high of $22.89 in trading before finishing the day 22.51% higher at $22.37 on above average volume of 8.63 million. YELP shares are still down 8.99% since the company’s March 2012 IPO.

Shares of Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA), a provider of social gamer services, fell sharply in trading today.

ZNGA shares slipped as the company lost yet another top executive. Mike Verdu, ZNGA’s Chief Creative Officer, resigned to start his own company. Verdu is the fifth executive to leave ZNGA this month.

ZNGA shares fell to an intra-day low of $2.95 in trading today before finishing the day 3.96% lower at $2.96 on volume of 13.29 million. ZNGA shares have fallen 68.84% since the company’s December 2011 IPO.

Shares of JoS. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. (NASDAQ: JOSB),  a designer, manufacturer, retailer and direct marketer of men’s tailored clothing and casual clothing and accessories, and retailer of tuxedo rental products, were amongst the biggest gainers in trading today.

JOSB shares surged after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results, and also announced plans to open new stores.

JOSB shares rose to an intra-day high of $49.48 in trading today before finishing the day 13.96% higher at $47.44 on above average volume of 4.32 million. Year-to-date, JOSB shares have fallen 2.71%, underperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of The Fresh Market Inc. (NASDAQ: TFM), a Greensboro, North Carolina-based specialty retailer focusing on perishable product categories, fell sharply in trading today.

TFM shares initially rose today, touching a 52-week high of $65.69, as the company reported its second-quarter financial results. TFM shares, however, failed to hold on to their gains in late trading as investors took profit after the stock touched a 52-week high.

TFM shares ended the day 5.72% lower at $58.16 on above average volume of 3.96 million. Year-to-date, the stock has gained 45.76%, outperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB), the social networking giant, fell in trading today.

FB shares fell to an intra-day low of $19.07 in trading today before finishing the day 1.24% lower at $19.10 on volume of 16.05 million. FB shares have fallen 49.74% since the company’s May 2012 IPO.

Shares of Joy Global Inc. (NYSE: JOY), a manufacturer and servicer of high productivity mining equipment, rose sharply in trading today.

JOY shares even as the company gave a weak outlook. JOY also reported its third-quarter financial results.

JOY shares rose to an intra-day high of $55.09 in trading today before finishing the day 2.56% higher at $54.43 on above average volume of 11.99 million. Year-to-date, JOY shares have fallen 39.29%, underperforming the S&P 500.

Shares of H.J. Heinz Company (NYSE: HNZ), a food processing company engaged in the manufacturing and marketing of a range of food products, fell in trading today.

HNZ shares slipped even as the company reported solid first-quarter financial results, driven by growth in emerging markets.

HNZ shares fell to an intra-day low of $55.75 in trading today before finishing the day 2.25% lower at $56.12 on above average volume of 3.77 million. Year-to-date, HNZ shares have gained 3.85%, underperforming the S&P 500.
