Physicians Formula Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: FACE) shares rose sharply on Friday after the Azusa, California-based cosmetics company released its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2012.
FACE shares ended the day 22.26% higher at $3.79 after touching an intra-day high of $4.
Physicians Formula, which specializes in the development and marketing of products for the mass market channel, reported first-quarter net sales of $26.2 million, compared with $21.1 million reported for the same period in the previous year. Net sales growth in the first quarter was driven by a rise in color cosmetics sales and expanded distribution of skin care line.
FACE reported first-quarter net income of $2.4 million, or $0.16 per share, compared with $0.5 million, or $0.03 per share reported for the same period in the previous year.
Ingrid Jackel, Chairwoman and CEO of Physicians Formula, said that FACE is pleased with its first-quarter results, which exceeded both top and bottom line expectations. Jackel said that FACE has returned to profitability due to strong product performance and financial discipline.
