Major Gainers and Losers in Early Trading on October 2; ILMN, MOS, PCS, GGP, GMED, EXPR

Shares of Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN), a developer and manufacturer of life sciences tools and integrated systems for the analysis of genetic variation and function, are soaring in trading today. At last check, ILMN shares were trading 6.61% higher at $52.27 on above average volume of 4.94 million. ILMN shares hit an intra-day high of $52.96 in trading today.

ILMN shares are gaining in trading today on reports that Roche may consider another bid for the company. The Times of London said in a report that Roche may look to acquire ILMN for $60 per share.

Shares of Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS), a producer and marketer of combined concentrated phosphate and potash crop nutrients for the global agriculture industry, are down sharply in trading today. At last check, MOS shares were trading 4.45% lower at $55.43 on above average volume of 4.31 million. The stock hit an intra-day low of $55.38 in trading today.

MOS shares are down after the company reported its first-quarter fiscal 2013 financial results. MOS reported net earnings of $429 million, or $1.01 per share for the first quarter of fiscal 2013, compared to $526 million, or $1.17 per share reported for the same period in the previous year. The decline in earnings was mainly due to lower phosphate volumes and prices.

Jim Prokopanko, President and CEO of Mosaic, said that the long-term outlook for crop nutrition is outstanding, and MOS is well-positioned as the world’s largest potash and phosphates producer.

Shares of MetroPCS Communications Inc. (NYSE: PCS), a facilities-based wireless broadband mobile communications provider in the U.S., are seeing a huge rally in trading today. At last check, PCS shares were trading 19.10% higher at $13.10 on above average volume of 9.33 million. PCS shares hit a 52-week high of $14.51 in trading today.

PCS shares are soaring in trading today after Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Deutsche Telekom AG is nearing a transaction with PCS to boost the scale of its T-Mobile USA division.

Shares of General Growth Properties Inc. (NYSE: GGP), a real estate investment trust (REIT), are down in trading today. At last check, GGP shares were trading 0.89% lower at $19 on volume of 2.13 million. GGP shares hit an intra-day low of $18.75.

Bill Ackman, one of GGP’s major shareholders, on Monday said that urged GGP to merge with Simon Property Group. Speaking at the Value Investing Congress in New York, Ackman also warned of a potential “creeping takeover” of GGP by Brookfield Properties.

Shares of Globus Medical Inc. (NYSE: GMED), a medical device company engaged in the design, development and commercialization of products that promote healing in patients with spine disorders, are climbing in trading today. At last check, GMED shares were trading 5.68% higher at $19.53 on volume of 66,992. GMED shares hit a 52-week high of $19.93 in trading today.

Shares of Express Inc. (NYSE: EXPR), a specialty apparel and accessory retailer offering both women’s and men’s merchandise, are sinking in trading today. At last check, EXPR shares were trading 20.45% lower at $11.94 on above average volume of 5.81 million. EXPR shares hit a 52-week low of $11.86 in trading today.

EXPR shares are sinking after the company updated its sales and earnings outlook for the third quarter of fiscal 2012. EXPR now expects third-quarter fiscal 2012 comparable sales to decline in the mid single digit range. Net income for the third quarter is expected to be between $14 million and $17 million, or $0.16 per share and $0.20 per share.
