News Corporation (NASDAQ: NWSA), a diversified global media company, on Monday, said that Gerson Zweifach, its general counsel, will be responsible for overseeing the Management and Standards Committee. NWSA had formed the committee last year to oversee investigations related to the phone hacking scandal at its U.K. newspaper division.
The committee was previously supervised by Joel Klein. The appointment of Zweifach will enable Klein to move back to his full-time role as CEO of NWSA’s education division. Klein had joined the company after resigning as chancellor of the New York City Department of Education in 2010. Although Klein was brought in to boost NWSA’s education business, he has spent majority of his time over the past year dealing with the U.K. investigations.
News Corp. said that move will allow it to consolidate efforts tied to U.K. and related investigations within its legal group. Zweifach had been in charge of NWSA’s legal group since joining the company back in February this year.
In the new role, Zweifach, who has served as a member of the Standards committee since February, will report to NWSA’s independent directors.
The phone hacking scandal has raised questions about News Corp.’s ethical standards. The scandal led to the closure of News of the World tabloid in the U.K. The company also had to abandon its plan to acquire the remaining stake in British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC. There have also been calls for CEO Rupert Murdoch to step down as NWSA’s CEO.
NWSA shares finished 0.10% higher at $20.09 in Monday’s trading session.
