Technology giant Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) kicked off its annual developers conference today by unveiling an ultra-thin Macbook Pro.
With high definition “Retina display”, the new Macbook pro is 0.71 inch, and weighs 4.46 pounds. It has a resolution of 2,880 by 1,880 pixels, Apple’s marketing director Phil Schiller today said.
Commenting on the ultra-thin Macbook pro, CEO Tim Cook, said that it is the most advanced Mac, AAPL has ever built.
Apple also previewed iOS6, next version of its mobile operating system. iOS6 has a number of new features, including tighter integration with Facebook and a new mapping tool that includes turn-by-turn navigation.
Scott Forstall, Senior Vice President of iOS software, said that iOS6 continues the rapid pace of innovation that is helping Apple reinvent the phone and create the iPad category, delivering the best mobile experience available on any device.
The Cupertino, California-based company also announced that it started shipping the new Macbook Air.
Cook said at the conference, which is being held at San Francisco’s Moscone Center, that customers have downloaded 30 billion apps, and the company has paid out over $5 billion to developers. Cook also said that Apple will shortly have 155 countries for its app store.
The Worldwide Developers Conference will run through Friday. In the past, Apple has unveiled new software for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch at the conference. This year’s conference was sold out in less than two hours, Cook said. The conference is being attended by about 5,000 people.
Apple shares have slipped in trading today, tracking losses in the broad market. At last check, AAPL shares were trading 1.06% lower at $574.14 on volume of 16.30 million. Apple shares have gained 41.57% this year.
