Shares of StemCells Inc. (NASDAQ: STEM), a biotechnology company, saw a huge rally in trading today.
STEM shares ended the day 106.90% higher at $1.80 on above average volume of 16.75 million. The stock touched an intra-day high of $1.82 in trading today.
STEM shares rallied after the company presented preclinical data showing its human neural stem cells restored memory and improved synaptic function in two animal models relevant to Alzheimer’s disease. The data was presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2012 in Vancouver, Canada.
The study results demonstrated that transplanting the cells into the hippocampus statistically increased memory in two different animal models. The researchers saw increased synaptic density and enhanced memory post transplantation.
Stephen Hunn, MD, FACS, FAAP, Vice President and Head of CNS Program at StemCells, said that Alzheimer’s disease is complex and challenging disorder and the field would benefit from the pursuit of a diverse range of treatment approaches.
